When my youngest daughter was in preschool we would walk to where her brothers' bus would drop him off at the end of his school day and she and I would build little fairy houses out of sticks, leaves, flowers and whatever else we might happen to find near the bus stop. It was a little slice of magic in the middle of the day. I'm grateful that she did not know at the time about Sylvain Trabut otherwise my performance would have been judged so much more harshly. Friday Props going out this week to Sylvain Trabut for his sculptures Read More >>
The work we want to acknowledge is something that goes from tiny to enormous and back to tiny. It's dreamscape collages in resin with sunlight crashing through. It's forms within shapes within stories within images within deeper stories still - it's the work of Dustin Yellin, Psychogeographies. Read More >>
In a first for Friday Props we are handing out posthumous Props to Lotte Reiniger for her amazing breakthroughs in early animation techniques, and by early we are talking full-length feature film animation ELEVEN YEARS before Walt Disney produced Snow White. (Is it us or does it seem that women inventors rarely get the credit due at the time of their invention?) It's one thing to use existing tools to create something, but it is quite another to invent tools to allow you to express your vision. Her work on the film The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) involved devising the first form Read More >>
Today we hand out props to Subpar Parks - a hilarious Instagram account that creates posters for national parks and other outdoor spaces that have recieved 1-star reviews. When you see what people say about these natural wonders it makes you curious if they have ever set foot in nature before. Props for turning something pretty sad into something pretty darn funny. Been there. Done that. But is it the worst place? Read More >>

We've taken a few weeks off from handing out Friday Props and I think most folks would agree it's understandable we would do so. The world has suddenly changed for all of us and can seem overwhelming and frightening with nothing but bad news, which is why this week are back with Friday Props for Beautiful News - the good things we might not see amid all the fallout of COVID-19. It's Friday Props and this time we dole them out to Takehiro Kishimoto - a Japanese food artist who carves intricate and beautiful patterns and objects into fruits and vegetables. Read More >>
