Friday Props - Robyn Rich

Trends and fads come and go in all sorts of areas of life. Jewelry does not escape this and back in the 1700's there was a trend called 'eye miniatures' which were pieces of jewelry depicting the eye or eyes of a spouse, child, loved one or lover. These were usually painted on ivory and worn as pendants, bracelets, brooches or rings. Often they were decorated with ornate frames. Because the paintings were only of an eye they were somewhat abstract and anonymous to all but the wearer. They often carried with them strong sentiments as they were typically very personal.

This week for Friday Props we recognize the work of Robyn Rich, a Melbourne artist who enjoys working across an variety of mediums, but is especially fond of oil painting. Coupled with her use of small everyday objects as canvas, her eye minuatures can be playful, startling, humorous, and even thought-provoking.
